A portable object used in dance to support or enhance a performance. A prop may be used in dance as a creative stimulus or as an extension of the body and/or movement.
A movement that involves travelling from one place to another across a space (e.g., walking, galloping, rolling).
Props are often used in dance pieces. For example, Indigenous dancers use coloured hoops in the Hoop dance, Highland dancers use a sword in the Sword dance, and some Fosse-style jazz dances use bowler hats as part of the choreography.
Some props may have cultural significance, while others are incorporated into the dance piece for stylistic or choreographic purposes. Props that are of cultural significance should not be replicated.
Check out this video to learn more about how a Highland dancer dances over and across the sword.
Consider the following questions:
- Can you think of any other dances that use props?
- Why might a dancer incorporate a prop into their dance piece?
Record your responses using a method of your choice.

Props might be used individually, with a partner, or in a group to create emotions such as excitement, sadness, or joy by the way we interact with the object.
Let’s explore the type of movements that could be performed using a prop.
