As a visual artist becomes familiar with the elements and principles of design, they begin to develop their own style. Many artists become interested in using specific mediums, materials, and techniques that serve their style. Some artists will choose to continue studying visual arts professionally, which is also known as fine arts.

It is important to remember that there are no rules for determining if an artwork is considered fine art. What is and is not treated as fine art depends on the cultural context in which the artwork is created and exhibited.
