Kindness to yourself
There are many ways to be kind.
It’s important to be kind to yourself. Being kind to yourself means taking care of your mind and your body.
Some way to be kind to yourself could be:
- eating nourishing foods
- doing things you enjoy
- taking deep breaths when you need to
- saying kind words to yourself
Sometimes, we might be feeling sad or upset.
When we say kind words to ourselves, it can make us feel better.

Kindness to others
It’s important to be kind to others as well as yourself. Kindness to others can look like:
- helping a friend
- sharing a toy or book
- giving a hug (with permission)

Mehar was playing outside at recess when she saw her friend Oliver slip in the mud. Mehar ran over to see Oliver. He was having a hard time getting out of the mud, so Mehar reached out her hand and helped pull him up.
Mehar helped a friend.
Antonio loves playing with cars. It’s his favourite thing to do. He has a favourite red car that he carries around with him. Ms. Wilson said they had time to play with anything they wanted. Lots of kids were reading books and playing with toys. Antonio noticed that Connor was sitting in the corner by himself. He went over and let Connor borrow his red car so Connor could play.
Antonio shared a toy with his friend.
Clara was waiting for her mom after school when she saw Esma. Esma was crying. Esma explained that she dropped the picture she drew in the snow by accident, and it got ruined. She wanted to show her mom and dad but now she can’t. Clara knew she couldn’t fix the problem, but she went up to Esma and asked if she would like a hug. Esma said ‘yes’ and stopped crying because the hug made her feel better.
Clara asked if her friend needed a hug.

If we see a friend who is going through a hard time and we want to help them feel better, we can ask different questions before taking any actions. Check out the following examples of questions you can ask.

The following are a few phrases we can use to express ourselves when we are having a hard time:
- I am feeling sad or upset.
- I am not ready to talk yet.
- I would like a hug.
- I need some space.
Kindness to the Earth
It’s important to be kind to the Earth. There are many ways we can be kind to the Earth.
One of the ways we can help is by recycling. Recycling is when you take trash and turn it into something new.
All sorts of things can be recycled like plastic, glass, cardboard, paper, metal, and more!
When we recycle materials that we are done with them, there is less waste that stays in the environment.
It is very important to reduce waste to protect the animals and plants from getting sick and to keep the water clean.
In Ontario, there are different bins that are used for different types of waste. Review the following flashcards to learn about the different bins.
