Hobbies are the things we choose to do that bring us joy. These things become a part of who we are as people.

Did You Know: Jonah Larson
Jonah Larson is a 16-year-old boy who loves to crochet. He started to crochet when he was five years old and when he was 11, he started his own crochet business! Jonah was originally born in Ethiopia. Now, he sells his creations and donates the money to give back and support his village in Ethiopia. He has started a library and a science lab there for many kids to enjoy!

Putting sentences together
A compound sentence is made up of two or more simple sentences joined together.
One way to join simple sentences is by using a comma and a connecting word called a coordinating conjunction.
Let’s practice creating a compound sentence with the following sentences.
Micah builds robots. Micah programs robots.
If we add a comma and the word “and” we make a compound sentence!

Step 1: Review your graphic organizer.
Step 2: Create simple sentences to share your idea. Try creating compound sentences to share your ideas. You may use your notebook or another method of your choice to record your sentences.
Step 3: Review your sentences.
- Make sure each new sentence starts with a capital letter.
- Use capital letters when using proper nouns.
- Make sure to use a period, question mark or exclamation mark depending on the sentence you create.
- Check your spelling using a dictionary.
- Read your poem out loud to make sure it makes sense.

How to use a dictionary and an online dictionary
The dictionary words are arranged in alphabetical order.
- Look for Guide Words. The words at the top tell you which word you will find at the beginning and end of the page.
- Look for pictures. Some dictionaries may include pictures. These can help you to find the word you are looking for quickly.
- Look at the definition. Some words sound the same but are spelled differently. Make sure you are using the spelling of the word that matches what you are wanting to say.
Hobby: something you like to do in your free time just for fun. This can be any activity you enjoy doing like drawing, playing sports or reading.
For example - "My favourite hobby is painting because I enjoy it!"
Step 5: Write out your sentences. If you like, you can create a drawing of you doing your hobby.
Step 6: If possible, share your hobby description with a partner.
