Minds On

Active inside or outside

When we decide whether we are going to be active either inside or outside, there are things we need to consider to be safe.

A family is spending some time walking in the neighborhood. A family is exercising together at home.

If we are going to be active outside, we need to consider the weather conditions and our surroundings.

  • If it is too hot, we could be at risk of developing fatigue (getting very tired).
  • If we go outside without proper sun protection (sunscreen and hat), we could be at risk of sunburn.
  • If it is extremely cold outside, we could be at risk of frostbite if we do not wear proper clothing, including a warm coat, mittens, and a hat.
  • Wet pavement may create a slipping hazard.

Explore the following carousel of images to explore ways we can prepare ourselves to enjoy outdoor activities safely.

If you are dressed properly, you will have more fun when you are being active outside. What do you need to wear in the summer to participate safely in outdoor activities? What about in the winter?

Record your answers using any method of your choice. Share your answers with a partner, if possible.

Action

Being active inside

If we are going to be active inside, we need to consider our surroundings.

  • It is important to consider a learning space free of objects on the ground to reduce the risk of tripping.
  • Wet floors may create a slipping hazard.

The hunt is on

Today you are going to go on a treasure hunt around your learning space, hunting for a variety of different items. What are some rules you need to consider as you move throughout your space? Examine your list from before to ensure that you are going to complete today’s task in the safest manner possible. Be sure to ask permission before going on the hunt.

Here are the items you need to find:

  • a book
  • a toy
  • a pair of socks or ball
  • something red
  • a pillow or bean bag

Now it’s time for you to create your own treasure hunt. What items are you going to search for? Make a list of at least 5 items and try it out yourself before sharing with others.

Consolidation

Where do you prefer to get active?

Today we discovered that we can be active and creative in a variety of physical spaces. Using any method of your choice (e.g., draw a picture, write a sentence, videotape your response), choose a space where you like to be active. How do you make sure you can move around your space safely? What are some ways you prepare your space? (e.g., Are there things that need to be moved? Are there things you need to keep away from?) Explain what activities you can try in this space that you have chosen.
