Encouraging participation

When people feel like they are being treated fairly, they are more likely to participate in an activity or sport.

Can you recognize what might encourage or motivate someone to join an activity or a sport? Examine the following image and decide if these individuals are demonstrating encouraging sports behaviour. When you are ready, record your answer in a method of your choice.

There are many factors that can either motivate or make it difficult for people to be physically active every day.

If you enjoy the activity or sport you are participating in, it is more likely you are motivated to continue. However, if you do not enjoy the activity or sport, you are less likely to continue.

A sense of belonging involves more than simply knowing or recognizing the other people you are playing with. Instead, it involves gaining acceptance, attention, and support from the group as well as providing the same attention to other members in your group. When one has a sense of belonging, they are more motivated to remain in the group and stay physically active.

Can you think of a time you felt a sense of belonging in a group?

Some other factors that can either motivate or make it difficult for people to be physically active everyday include self-confidence, the level of peer support, availability of transportation, equipment, time, family support, personal abilities, gender barriers or expectations and financial resources.
