Minds On

It is a personal choice

How do you decide what to do when it comes to physical activity? Do you prefer team sports or individual activities? Would you rather be indoors or outdoors?

Let’s explore the following video from TVOkids. In this video, you will meet Bradley.

Bradley is an 11-year-old from Six Nations of the Grand River in Ontario.

As you explore the video, focus your attention on the ways that Bradley stays active – do you enjoy any of same things?

If we choose activities that we enjoy, we are more likely to engage in them often and with more enthusiasm.

Physical activity

Five girls wearing soccer uniforms run across a grassy field towards you chasing a soccer ball.

Physical activity is any body movement that is produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy to be expended. It includes all daily active movement, including activities such as:

  • free time – sports, fun, play
  • getting to and from places
  • part of a school or workday

Why should we participate?

It is important to participate in physical activity every day. There are physical, social, and emotional benefits to being active.

Some of these benefits include:

  • lowered risk of type 2 diabetes and some cancers
  • stronger bones, muscles, and joints
  • feeling better (more energy, a better mood, feeling more relaxed and sleeping better)

Making physical activity enjoyable

Five boys wearing basketball uniforms play basketball in front of a basketball net on an indoor basketball court.

In Canada, only 40% of people between the ages of 5 and 17 meet the daily physical activity target of at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity.

Why do you think that number is so low?

There are factors that need to be considered to make sure that activities are accessible to everyone. These factors influence our choice whether to participate or not.

True or false?

Explore the following statements about physical activities. Which statements encourage participation?

Select ‘True’ if the statement encourages participation and select ‘False’ if it doesn’t encourage participation.

When creating your bingo game, be sure to consider the following:

  • the physical space where the activity might occur (is it inside or outside? Is it in a small or large room?)
  • a variety of fitness levels and abilities
  • people will have different equipment and materials at their disposal

You must include nine activities on your bingo card. Here are a few ideas…

  • going for a wheel or a walk
  • passing an object with a partner or against a wall
  • meditating in a quiet space

Are you ready? You can fill out your activities on the following fillable and printable Bingo Card activity sheet. You can also use your notebook or another method to make your bingo card.

What can you do?

A skateboarder wearing a helmet performs an aerial trick on their skateboard at an outdoor skateboard park.

Choose your favourite physical activity. It can take place indoors or outdoors. You are going to create an information card, a video message, or an oral message to showcase the activity.

Make sure your activity follows these factors so all participants can enjoy it:

My physical activity

Here is an example to help you:

Riding my bike

Riding my bike is a great way to keep active.

  • it can take place indoors on a stationary bike, or outdoors
  • it respectfully reflects cultural content
  • it is low impact but is still aerobic exercise
  • it strengthens leg, abdominal, and back muscles
  • there are many types of bikes to ride so it is adaptable
  • it is gender-neutral
