Minds On
Stay alert, stay safe
When we are at home or out in the community, it is important that we stay safe. What do you think staying safe means? It could mean not opening the door for anyone you don’t know, or it could mean waiting for a green light and walking signal to cross the street.

Explore the following episode of TVOK News to help Daniel discover different ways to stay safe.
With a partner, if possible, brainstorm different ways you can stay safe when you are at home, at school, or out in the community.
Record your ideas on the computer, on paper, or using an audio tool.

Safe here, safe over there
It is important to know different ways to stay safe outside and indoors. Let’s explore some of those ways!
Outdoor safety
Explore the images of ways we can stay safe while outdoors.
Let’s review the safety tips you just explored for outside:
- Let an adult know where you are when you are outside at all times.
- Wear a hat and sunscreen to protect you from the sun.
- Wear a helmet when you are riding a bike.
- Do not touch animals you do not know.
Inside safety
Explore the following images of ways we can stay safe while indoors.
Online safety
Online environments are another place you should be mindful of your safety.

Remember to talk to an adult if you ever need help when you are online.
Here are some safety tips when you are online:- Tell a trusted adult if you see something that is not right.
- Never share any personal information online.
- Make sure you follow your household rules when it comes to internet safety.
Other safety tips
Here are some other important safety tips:
- Remember, your body is your own and no one else’s. Practise saying “NO.”
- If anyone wants to give you something and tells you not to tell your parents or a teacher, make sure you let an adult you trust know.
Saying yes and no
Another way to stay safe is to know when to say yes and when to say no. It is nice to say yes when you want to do something, and you also know it is safe.
Explore the following examples in the Response Chart, and create a plan of how you would answer. Choose the category for that example: outside, inside, online or in the community.
Complete the Response Chart in your notebook or using the following fillable and printable document. If you would like, you can use speech-to-text or audio recording tools to record your thoughts.

Demonstrating safety
We have learned different ways to stay safe. Now, with a partner if possible, choose a situation on how to be safe. For example, it is important to wear sunscreen when you are outdoors or wear a helmet when riding a bike.
You can choose how you will demonstrate your situation. You can either create a skit and act out the situation or create a commercial and then present it. You can record your response using any method of your choice.
