Three types of bullying

Bullying means that someone is trying to hurt, harm, intimidate, or influence you. Bullying is a repeated act that occurs many times. There are three types of bullying.

Examples of physical bullying include:
  • physically touching someone without their consent
  • pushing, shoving, hitting
  • knocking someone down
  • pulling their hair, poking someone, tripping someone

Examples of verbal bullying include:
  • using your words to be hurtful
  • name calling
  • teasing someone about their appearance

Examples of social bullying include:
  • leaving someone out of a group
  • embarrassing someone in front of others
  • spreading rumors online (cyberbullying)
  • always ignoring someone

Sometimes there are side effects of bullying including:

  • Stomach aches
  • Shyness
  • Not wanting to participate in activities usually enjoyed
  • Not being able to sleep or sleeping too much

Things to do if someone is being bullied

If someone is being bullied, here are some things that you can do.

  • Walk away.
  • Tell a trusted adult, such as a parent/guardian, teacher, or coach.
  • Remind yourself you are a good person worthy of respect.
  • Stand up for others.
  • Laugh it off.
  • Ask for help.
  • Confidently tell the bully to stop.
  • Say “NO!”

Ways to take care of yourself

Here are some ways to take care of yourself if you are being bullied.

  • Do things you enjoy such as listening to music or reading books.
  • Playing sports.
  • Practise mindfulness.
  • Go for a walk.
  • Eat well and get plenty of rest.

Thoughts on bullying

Bullying is dangerous to our physical and mental health. Reflect on some of the choices you can make to have a positive impact on your mental health. Remember that there are times when you may need help from someone else.

Who can you talk to if you need help? If you are being bullied or know of someone who is being bullied, tell an adult right away.

Identify the following:

  • an example of one of the types of bullying
  • tips on how to say “NO!” to bullying (e.g., confidently telling the bully to stop)
  • examples of self-care and where to get help (e.g., kidshelpphone.ca)
