Substance use

Focusing on our mental health is critical to leading a healthy life. There are ways to care for our mental health as was explored in the Minds On section. Unfortunately, there are times when people cannot properly care for their own mental health. One of these reasons includes substance use and addiction.

What is substance use?

Harmful substance use is when a person uses medicines, drugs, alcohol, or tobacco in an inappropriate way. When this use becomes a pattern, it has a negative impact on a person’s health, including their mental health.

Some examples of harmful substance use can include:

  • underage drinking
  • binge drinking
  • injecting drugs, which is harmful to the body

Some examples of mental health issues can include:

  • Depression–when a person has a deep feeling of sadness that is hard to eliminate from their thoughts. They may become disinterested in the world around them.

  • Anxiety disorder–when a person feels extremely worried and has feelings of mental tension. Anxiety is often accompanied by a faster heart rate and recurring intrusive thoughts.

  • Losing contact with reality–this leads to a person developing hallucinations (sensing things that are not there) and/or delusions (a false belief).

Problematic substance use and mental health issues are often closely connected. Many people suffer from both. Sometimes a mental health issue can cause problematic substance use. Sometimes problematic substance use can cause a mental health issue.

Getting help

Addictive substances can negatively impact one’s physical and mental health. There are many effective strategies to respond to problematic substance use, including self-coping and self-awareness strategies to help manage stressful situations. However, sometimes professional help is needed to better understand the root causes of problematic substance use. There are several organizations available for support within the community.
