Brainstorm
Brainstorm
What kinds of things can you count in nature or around your learning space?
As you brainstorm ideas, you can write, draw, take pictures, or record a description.
Let’s start a nature collection using a container, like a bag, shoebox, or cardboard box.
Try It
Try it
Try to collect more than 1 of each item but not more than 10 of the same item.
You can use real items that you collect from a nature walk, draw your own pictures, take photos, cut out pictures from a magazine or newspaper, or find pictures on the internet.

You can also use the images in the printable document My Nature Collection to cut and paste onto a separate page.
Show care for the environment
If you go outside with a trusted adult, be sure to show care for the environment.
Do not take anything living (e.g., like picking flowers) or take the items that an animal might need (e.g., like acorns).
Consolidation
What are your favourites?
First, choose your favourite items from your collection or from the cut and paste page.
Next, count them in order from 1 to 10.
Pause and Reflect
Pause and reflect
Did you choose 10 or fewer favourite items?
What do you notice and wonder about the items?

Finally, create groups of similar items from your collection. Count each of the groups of items you placed in your collection.
