Minds On

Warm-up: Strike a pose

To warm up, we are going to move around in different ways.

  1. If possible, play your favourite songs or play some music and then move to the music.
  2. Move to the music in your space in your own way. Be careful of items in your space!
  3. When the music stops, freeze your body like a statue in an interesting way!

Another idea that you can try is to hold something without dropping it.

Freeze Game

Use your imagination to try creating different statues.

As you work through this learning activity, you can record your ideas in many ways.

Access the following audio recording to learn more about how to record your ideas.

How to Record Your Ideas

Action

Safety comes first

Safety rules

Let's explore the following rules that will keep us safe:

  • walk around furniture such as desks, chairs, tables, and appliances
  • do not stand on chairs, tables, or counters
  • move carefully in your place
  • keep the floor clear
  • carry heavy objects with a partner
  • work cooperatively if you are working with a partner
  • look to the front when walking

Safe or unsafe?

Let’s practise what we’ve learned about safety.

For each of the following images, decide if it is safe or unsafe.

Select the correct answer, then press “Check Answer” to see how you did.

Balance challenge

Try to practise balancing using different poses.

Hold each pose for 3 seconds. Try again and hold the pose for 5 seconds.

Remember the rules from earlier that would keep us safe.

Check out the following video to explore how we can balance an object on a body part.

Pose like an animal!

Think about how different animals move. Try to make a pose that is like the animal you thought about.

Check out these ideas to help you get started.

Freeze game

Remember the freeze game that we played earlier in this learning activity? We will play that game again!

Play your favourite music and when the music stops, remember you have to freeze.

For this time, try to balance when you freeze.

So, move with the music, but when the music stops, freeze while balancing your body.

Student Success

Think-Pair-Share

What if you could play freeze tag with one or more people?

  • Would you play the game differently? How?
  • How do you know if everyone is having fun?
  • How can you keep everyone safe?

If possible, play your game.

Note to teachers: See your teacher guide for collaboration tools, ideas and suggestions.
