Action
Explore
Using the answers we discussed in the Minds On section, let’s explore slogans and logos in both magazines and commercials. Sometimes the messages in ads are:
- "implied" which means it is hidden and makes us think about what the message could be
- "overt" which means it is clear and we can understand the message
For example, let's explore the logo and slogan from the Minds On.
Overt Message: The logo uses
- big, bold letters
- a bright background
- the name of the product
The overt message helps us to remember the product name.
Implied Message: The name "Lego" came from the Danish words "leg godt" which means "play well."
The company used these words when creating the product.
Find 1-3 advertisements for products. Think about the following questions:
- What is the product?
- Where did you find it?
- What is the slogan and/or logo?
- Are there an overt and/or implied message?
Use the Analyzing Slogans and Logos Organizer, an audio clip, or another method of your choice to record your information.
