Minds On

How was it made?

Let’s explore the following episode of Wolf Joe entitled “Making Tracks” to think about how it was made.

Answer the following questions:

  • What type of media is this?
  • What is the purpose of this media?
  • Who is the intended audience for Wolf Joe? How do you know this?
  • Do you know anyone who likes Wolf Joe? Why do they like it?
  • Do you like Wolf Joe? Why or why not?
  • Do you know any adults who like Wolf Joe? Why or why not?

Action

Exploring media purposes

There are many different purposes for the media. For example, a news broadcast provides information about weather, traffic, and news. A cartoon provides entertainment. A board game provides entertainment.

Different types of media will appeal to different audiences. For example, a news broadcast would appeal to adults as it provides information. A cartoon would appeal more to children as it there are often fun objects, music, sound effects, and fun characters. A board game, depending on how difficult it is, could appeal to both children and/or adults as its purpose is entertainment.

Student Success

Share your ideas with a friend!

Think about some of the media you are familiar with.

  • Is it always easy to know who will be interested in a television show or game?
  • Can children be interested in the news?
  • Can adults be interested in cartoons?

Consolidation

Creating a news broadcast or podcast!

Create a news broadcast or podcast! Pick a topic that you would like to share information on. For example, you could create a news broadcast for the weather, for news happening in your neighbourhood or community, or to provide information to people about a specific topic.

While you’re designing your newscast, consider the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of your news broadcast? How will you convey that purpose to your audience?
  • Who is your intended audience? How will they know they are your audience?

You may wish to record your news broadcast using audio, video, on your computer or you can write it out. Once complete, share with a partner, if possible.

Review your learning

Take a moment to review your learning. Reflect on the news broadcast you have created and consider the following questions. You may record your responses using a method of your choice.

  • What are two things you like the best about your broadcast? How did they help make your broadcast the best it could be?
  • What is one thing you would like to change or add?
  • If you were going to make another broadcast, what would do differently next time?
