Minds On

What is an ad?

There are many reasons why we choose to buy a certain product or service. Think of a time when you or someone you know purchased a product or service. What were the reasons why one product or service was chosen over another? What factors may have influenced the decision?

Advertisements are messages that are meant to inform or influence the person who receives them.

Advertisements can be found in many different places and can take many different forms. Think of when you have noticed an advertisement for a service or product. Who was the intended audience? What was the purpose of the advertisement? What form did the advertisement take? Where was the advertisement located?

Advertisers use many different techniques to make their advertisements more effective. The more you know about the techniques advertisers use, the more effective you will be at understanding and creating this unique media form!

Action

What are overt and implied messages?

Advertisements often have an overt message as well as an implied message.

Overt messages

Overt messages are very clear and apparent. The message of the advertiser is often obvious to the receiver.

Ads for Papa’s Pizza (a tasty dinner, quality time with your family) and Bella Soap (kids squeaky clean in no time)

Implied messages

Implied messages are the hidden meanings or messages. We can make a guess or inference about the implied message by using our knowledge and the facts or evidence in the message. An inference is when you make a conclusion or opinion based on known facts or evidence.

Examine the advertisement below for an example of the implied message in an advertisement.

A shoe ad with a runner. The tagline says, “Run like the wind.”
