  • What information could be included on the packaging of a product?
  • Why is it important to include different types of information on the packaging?
  • Is all product packaging the same?

Action

Packaging use in marketing

Brainstorm

Thinking about packaging

  • How is packaging used in marketing?
  • What are some of the elements used to make packaging appealing?
  • What information is included on a package? Why?
  • Why might vibrant packaging help to market a product

Record your ideas using a method of your choice.

How vibrant items may be appealing

Items that stand out may encourage people to try something new. When a product is appealing to someone they may be more inclined to try it. Advertisers may use colour and or scent descriptions to help encourage people to enjoy their product.

The importance of packaging

There are many reasons why the packaging of a product is important.

  1. Packaging helps to keep the items protected and safe from any damage
  2. Packaging helps to promote and display the product. It might describe the product inside, include instructions, or how to use the product. If it is food it might indicate the ingredients or nutrition facts.
  3. Packaging helps to attract the intended audience. The advertisers select specific fonts, keywords, colours, materials, and designs to appeal to their intended audience.
  4. Packaging helps to separate a product from other similar products.

Packaging in advertising

Does packaging really influence how we think about products?

Select a product of your choice and investigate how the company uses packaging to market their product.

Record your findings using a method of your choice.

Use the following questions to guide your research:

  • What information is included on the package?
  • What might certain information on a package symbolize about a product?
  • How can a company make their packaging stand out?
  • What might the use of the packaging say about a product or service offered?
  • Are these components used in combination with other marketing practices?

Consolidation

Design a new product to help others

Design a product of your choice!

Describe your product (how it is helpful/useful) and describe how you would design its packaging.

Consider:

  • What information you would include on the package
  • The message you want to share about the Product
  • How you would design the package

Explain your choices and design elements, and how they work together to convey a specific message to your intended audience.

Create a poster, a package example, a detailed written or audio description, or another method of your choice to share how you would create the package for your product.
