Exploring Perspective

Why is it important to include various perspectives and opinions in a media text?

How does this help to develop a more complete understanding of an event or ideas explored?

Explore the scenario below. Imagine that you were creating an article on the Autumn Fair. Whose perspectives would be included to create a full picture of the event?  Justify your choices and record your ideas using a method of your choice.

Scenario: There was an Autumn Fair at a community centre.  Various bakeries and farmers were setting up their stalls. They hauled big trays of treats and fresh produce onto long wooden tables. Some of the farmers recognized each other and called out to chat and share stories. Different community organizations arranged equipment on the far side of the room. They were hosting activities for the patrons. Children laughed as they ran by the food stalls to select a game. The Mayor arrived, rushing in and glancing about the room. They were getting ready to make a speech; it was almost time to start!

Perspectives

When information is shared through various media texts, we consider the message and the perspective that is presented.

It is always important to understand various perspectives and opinions in order to develop a more complete understanding of the situation or event.

For example: A television broadcast of a sports game presents the perspectives of multiple parties. They include interviews with the coaches and the players, the opinions of the announcers, messages from sponsors, shout outs from the fans and important information from the television network.  The broadcast provides a more complete understanding of the sports game and the various opinions regarding the game.

What are other examples where it might be important to understand multiple perspectives on a topic, event or idea? Why would this be important?

Record your ideas using a method of your choice.

Multiple sources

When exploring a topic or event it is important to examine a variety of different sources. This might include articles, books, videos, and other media texts. This helps us gain a better understanding of a topic because we can learn from various opinions and perspectives.
