Minds On

What’s in the bag?

Let’s use our imagination to play this game.

There is a child holding a paper bag with question marks around it.

Imagine there is a paper bag with something inside of it. Use the following clues to help you guess what is inside the bag:

  • it’s one object
  • the object is round
  • the object is a type of fruit

What do you think is in the bag?

Let’s add some new clues:

  • we can eat it
  • it grows on a tree
  • we can make juice from it

Did the new clues make it easier to guess? Can you guess what the object is? Share your guess with a partner, if possible.

Reflect

Were you able to guess what the object was? Did you use what you already know about oranges to help you guess? What strategies did you use to help you guess?

Share and explain

Explore

Have you ever participated in a Share and Explain? What did you share?

Let’s explore the video entitled “Ask the Wild Kratts: What Is Your Favourite Creature Power” and think about these questions:

  • How do we know which animal power each brother would want?
  • How does asking questions help us to better understand what is being said?

Practice

Now, let’s practice asking questions to find out more. Here is an example of an object:

This is a stuffed bear. He has fur and is very soft and small.

Can you think of questions to ask to find out more about the stuffed bear? What do you want to know?

A stuffed bear

Here are examples of questions you can ask to find out more. If you think of a different question, add it to the chart! We will discuss the chart out loud as well as explore it in text form.

We can ask different question to learn more! Asking questions after someone shares can show that we are interested and listening. How does it feel when someone shows they are interested in what we have to share?

Share and explain

Choose

Now it’s your turn to share and explain! Share an object, a book, or an experience you’ve had.

Explore this episode of Opie’s Home called, “Bot, Truck or Bear.” Opie doesn’t know which toy to share, and his mom helps him decide.

After you have selected what to share, decide what information about your item to share. Think of three (3) things you can share about the item. These can help get you started:

  • This is my…
  • I have had this for… years.
  • It’s special because…

Create

Now that you know what you want to share, it’s time to present! Present your object or experience using a method of your choice. This means you can create an audio or video recording or create a description. Be sure you include three pieces of information.

Share

If possible, find a partner to share with. Ask each other questions to learn more about the object/topic shared. You may use the chart from the Action section to help guide you.
