There are two bags with items. Are you able to guess what activity is about to happen from the items in each bag? How is the person doing this activity feeling? How do you know?

Bag 1: Inside is a helmet, a water bottle, a pair of running shoes with a happy face under the bag. Bag 2: Inside this
bag is bread, jam, and butter. There is a small unhappy face under the bag

Action

What is an inference?

When we use clues to make guesses about what will happen or what is happening, it is called making an inference. As an action, it is called inferring. The following images explain how we make inferences. The first image is for the clues I notice in the image or words. The second image represents what I already know. Those two things together create an inference.

Inferring

Explore the following three moments.

Press on each title below to access three different moments in life. Choose two moments and infer how the people are feeling in each moment.

Use clues from the image and the words to help you. You can use the chart just like the one above or discuss with a partner.

Moment #1

Are these children feeling happy or sad? How do you know?

A group of kids are outside on a summer day. They are embracing and smiling

Moment #2

How are they feeling? How do you know?

Kids in red and blue uniforms are playing soccer

Moment #3

How are they feeling? How do you know?
