Action

Organizing new information

The video from our Minds On section contained a lot of facts and information.

  1. What could we do to get ready to explore new information in an oral text?
  2. How do we know if some information is more important to know than others?

Discuss your answers with a partner if possible, or record your answers using a method of your choice.

Asking questions

Asking questions before, during, and after we explore an oral text helps us to organize the information we find.

For example, in the video from our Minds On section we might have considered the following questions:

Before During After

I wonder what Jenani’s story will be about?

I wonder how Maddie was able to help her friend after Jenani broke her arm?

I wonder what kinds of other games Maddie and Jenani like to play together?

Task 1: Asking questions

Once we have asked our questions, we can focus on finding specific answers in the oral text. Next, we can organize the information and determine which ideas are the most important.

Task 2: Main Idea and Key Details

Another way to understand a text is by finding the main idea and important or key details. Let’s revisit the Minds On video. This time, let’s figure out the main idea in Jenani’s story and find details from the text.

Complete the Main Idea and Key Details Table using the following fillable and printable document or record the main idea and key details using a method of your choice.
