What is important?

We are going to explore a video. In the following episode of The Space, Daniel discusses a new space probe that was launched into space to visit the sun.

Presentation Strategies

Now that you have recorded information from the video, let’s consider how the information was presented.

  • Was Daniel’s presentation easy to understand?
  • What kinds of strategies do you think Daniel uses to make his presentation clear?

You might have noticed that Daniel used different strategies in his presentation.

Let’s examine the following Presentation Strategies Chart. These strategies include vocal and non-verbal cues. Daniel, in the video, used these strategies to communicate his ideas.

Examples for the different presentation strategies from the video

Press the following tabs to explore examples of presentation strategies.

Daniel’s choice of words was descriptive and clear.

Daniel changed his tone of voice during the presentation to help us focus on specific ideas. For example, Daniel says:

“The probe, which is the size of a small car was launched into space on a 23-story rocket. That’s huge!”

Daniel emphasizes the words “small car” and “that’s huge!” by using an excited tone. This calls our attention to the size of the rocket and helps us to remember that piece of information.

To explore how Daniel’s tone of voice changed while saying the words, “small car” and “that’s huge,” you can check the video at -1:27 and -1:22 minutes.

Daniel changed his pace at different times during the presentation. He slowed down when he had to discuss important ideas so that the audience has a chance to understand.

For example: When Daniel describes the sun, he slows his speech, so the audience has time to understand:

“Now, what is 150 million kilometres from earth, is almost four and a half billion years old, and has a surface temperature of 5,600 degrees? Well, obviously the sun.”

To explore Daniel’s slow and clear voice, check the video at -1:57 to -1:47 minutes

Daniel spoke in a loud, clear voice during the presentation.

Here are two images of Daniel during his presentation demonstrating how he changes his facial expressions and gestures depending on what he is presenting.

He also makes eye contact with the camera throughout his presentation.

In the video, Daniel uses different images to clarify moments in his presentation.

Recycling

Let’s explore another episode of TVOK News. In the following episode, Daniel discusses how recyclables and other trash are being used to create floating parks and platforms for wildlife and nature.

We are going to consider two ideas during the video:

  • Which presentation strategies does Daniel use?
  • How do those presentation strategies help us to understand his main ideas?

Let’s go over some questions about each strategy that you can use during and after exploring the video. Provide examples from the video for the strategies that you notice by completing the Presentation Strategies Questions in your notebook or using the following fillable activity document.

Think-Pair-Share

Working independently or with a partner, if possible, go through the examples you recorded.

Reflect on the following questions:

What type of strategies did Daniel use, and did it help you understand their message?

  • What could the presenter do to make their presentation easier to understand?

If possible, share your ideas with a partner.

Note to teachers: See your teacher guide for collaboration tools, ideas and suggestions.

Extension

Create a recording or a letter to Daniel using a method of your choice. Provide him with descriptive feedback and strategies he could use to deepen his understanding of presentation strategies. (Your feedback and next steps should be supportive and respectful.)
