Minds On

What does it mean?

Brainstorm

Let’s think!

Brainstorm different music artists, authors, or poets. Do you follow the music or career of any artists (authors, poets, musicians, singers)?

With a partner, or independently, what do you think the messages that the poets, authors, or artists are trying to express within their work? Do the books, music or poems entertain us, persuade us, or inform us?

Action

Purposes of Presentation

Press the following tabs to discover reasons for presenting.

To provide amusement or enjoyment

To give facts or information

To cause someone to do something through reasoning or argument

Task 1: Consider this

Carefully consider the passage on the Raptors and determine which purpose it reflects. Is it to entertain, to inform, or to persuade? Be sure to locate proof of your choice in the passage. You can record your notes using paper, a computer, a descriptive audio clip, speech to text software, or a method of your choice.

Which NBA team do you think is the best in the league? If you ask me, it is the Toronto Raptors!

The Raptors became a part of the National Basketball Association in 1995. Since then, they have won division titles in 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020. In 2019 they won the conference and championship titles! What a great team. There aren’t very many NBA teams that have that kind of a record. The players all work hard to give the fans a great performance every time they play.

Kyle Lowry is a point guard and helped the team reach the playoffs during the 2013-2014 season. Fans come from all over the world to watch the Raptors play, not just the Toronto fans! You should watch a game and see why so many people love the team. The NBA season is from December until May and this year the Toronto Raptors are currently in 5th place in the league.

I can’t think of a better team. Go Raptors!

Now it’s your turn!

Search for articles or passages from books that entertain, inform, or persuade. Identify one article/passage for each purpose (find 3 in total) and record your notes using paper, a computer, a descriptive audio clip, speech to text software, or a method of your choice.

Task 2: This just in!

You have now had an opportunity to explore oral texts that inform, persuade, and entertain. Now you get the chance to explore a short newscast from TVOK News. What is the purpose of a newscast? Is it to entertain, persuade, or inform? If you responded, "to inform," you would be correct.

A newscast informs an audience about a specific topic. As a newscaster, Daniel has to communicate this information in a way that engages the audience.

As you explore this TVOK News clip, consider how Daniel the news anchor uses his body language and vocal emphasis to get the news to his audience.

Does he use props or aids to enhance the presentation?

How does Daniel communicate the information he shares to inform his audience?

Do you think Daniel's newscast is an effective way to inform? Why or why not?

If you were going to share this information in a short newscast, how would you communicate this information?

Record your thinking in a method of your choice.

Consolidation

Have your say

You have explored texts that inform, persuade, and inform. Now it is your turn to present information! What will your purpose be? Will you choose to entertain, persuade, or inform your audience with your presentation?

Your challenge is to present a skit, video/audio clip, written paragraph, brochure, or research paper on a topic of your choice. Use your critical thinking skills to share your knowledge of a topic that has relevance in our world right now. Once you have decided on what you want to share, you will need to organize your notes and present what you know in one of the three purpose forms that we have discussed in Minds On and Action.

Consider the following:

  • Climate change
  • Single-use plastics
  • Occupations
  • Sustainable fashion
  • Eco-tourism

As you begin planning for your presentation, you may choose to organize your ideas and information using the mind map below, the computer, a descriptive audio clip, speech to text software, or a method of your choice. Use your planning to tool to help you present your information.
