Minds On

How can audiences effect presentations?

Imagine that a guest speaker is coming to the school to discuss safety in the school yard. How might this presentation or the script for this presentation change depending on the different audiences of the school?

Brainstorm

Brainstorm

Choose two audiences and describe how the presentation would engage each of the audiences.

  • Kindergarten
  • Primary classes (grades 1-3)
  • Junior classes (grades 4 – 6)
  • Intermediate classes (grades 7 & 8)
  • Instructors and support staff in the building
  • Families

Record your ideas orally, digitally, in print or in a method of your choice.

Action

Task 1: Intended audience

We communicate with different people in different ways.

In each of the following situations, our communication will have different goals and intentions.

For example, if you are communicating to your friends or peers you will likely use words that your peers can understand and relate to but, if you are communicating with an adult, like a teacher or neighbour, your communication style would be different.

Consider the following scenarios:

Scenario 1

You must communicate that you will be early for your lunch appointment. Create the voice or text message you would use to communicate with:

  • an adult in your life
  • a friend
  • someone you have just met

Scenario 2

You must communicate that you are so excited to share some news! Create the voice or text message you would use to communicate with:

  • a friend
  • an adult in your life
  • your teacher

Record your messages orally or share them with a partner. You can also use a different method of your choice.

Task 2: Strategies to support a message

As you explore Alex’s message, consider who the audience for this video might be. How do you know?

How would the message of the video be adapted for a different audience (such as your peers, a group of scientists, or teachers)?

Choose a different audience and record how the message would be communicated differently.

Communication strategies

What strategies do we use when we are sharing information with others?

Press the following tabs to explore examples of communications strategies.

Do we share our message with a tone of warmth, invitation, welcome, or anger? In text it would be demonstrated through punctuation and word choice.

What words are we choosing to use?

Loudness or softness of our spoken words (in text it would be demonstrated in punctuation such as capitals, italics, exclamation marks).

How quickly or slowly do we speak? In text this would appear through punctuation or lack of punctuation and sentence structure.

Let’s return to Alex’s message!

Record Alex’s tone, word choice, volume, and pace.

Record your responses in the following fillable and printable document Video Response Chart. You can also complete this activity in your notebook or using the method of your choice.

Create an announcement

Create an announcement about an upcoming event. This could be a real event or one that you are imagining. You will be delivering this announcement to the following groups:

  • small children
  • peers
  • teachers
  • a public audience

Record your announcement using an audio recording or record a script for each announcement.

It should be clear which audience you are delivering your announcement to, based on the following checklist:
