Action

What can I do?

When you come to a word that you don’t know, try using one of these strategies.

These are the six I can try strategies that I can try when I come across a word I don't know. I can try to examine the pictures for clues. I can try to find parts of the word that I know. I can think about the main idea of the story. I can try to stretch out the sounds in the word. I can imagine the first sound of the word. And, I can skip over the words in the sentence, and reread it.

Let’s try it together

In the Minds On, we used the strategy, "Try to find parts of the word that I know" when we practiced making compound words.

  • She can write her name.
  • He found a notebook.
  • The doorway is always open.
  • Thank you for the cat.
  • He ran uphill.
