Choosing a book

Choosing books that we enjoy and understand is important. It gives us a chance to build our reading strategies and learn new words.

Using the “I Pick” rule is a quick and easy way of checking whether a book is too easy, too hard, or just right.

The “I Pick Rule” helps us decide which books to choose and why we are reading them.

I choose a book.

Purpose: Why do I want to read it? What is the purpose for reading this book?

Interest: Does the book or topic interest me? Am I using the cover for clues?

Comprehend: Do I understand it? Do I need help with the meaning?

Know: Do I know most of the words? Are some of the words too difficult to read?

Task 1: Show what you know!

Let’s pretend your teacher asked you to research Grade 3 science experiments, how would you decide which books would be helpful?

Consider each of these book covers and decide if they would be useful for your research. Use the “I Pick Rules” to help you make your decisions.

Two cats and a mouse dressed in spacesuits travelling through the solar system in a space ship. Children doing various science experiments with balloons, paper, blow dryer, and etc. Book cover with text. Brown dog holding a mail/letter with the words, “Can I be your dog?” on the front of the envelope.

Think-Pair-Share

If possible, find a peer to share your books with and discuss things you considered in selecting your book. Recommendations from a known and trusted source are one of the best ways to discover a new book!

Happy reading and best of luck as you build your reading collection and travel into a new adventure!

Note to teachers: See your teacher guide for collaboration tools, ideas and suggestions.

  • What are the different things we consider when selecting a book?
  • Why might some people choose to read books that are a little bit hard for them?
