Patterns are everywhere
Can you think of some examples of patterns at school or at home?
Explore the following TVOKids video entitled “Green Thumb Pattern Conundrum” to learn
Flower patterns
Let’s create different combinations of patterns using the flowers.
Tumbleweed bought yellow flowers, blue flowers, and red flowers.
You can create your patterns using the following Ten Frame. You can also draw your patterns in your notebook or use another method.
Your teacher will show you how to use the Ten Frame and then you can try using it yourself!
Be prepared to share your patterns and explain how your pattern repeats.
Record your ideas in a notebook or a method of your choice.

Think-Pair-Share
If possible, reflect on the following questions with a partner:
- What is the core of each pattern you explored?
- How do you know that is the core?
- How many times does the pattern repeat?
Record your ideas in a notebook or a method of your choice.
Be prepared to share your responses.
Note to teachers: See your teacher guide for collaboration tools, ideas and suggestions.
Creating patterns
Using materials you have, create three different repeating patterns and identify the core.
Record your pattern digitally, orally, or in print.
Consolidation
Pattern exploration
Let’s make our own patterns!
Create a pattern using objects around you, or use the following Frame.
- First, let's create a pattern with a core (a part that repeats).
- When you are done, draw a picture of your pattern or record it using a method of your choice.
Let’s explore the Frame together! Your teacher will show you how to use the Frame and then you can try using it yourself!
Can you make a different pattern?
Record your pattern using a method of your choice.
