Action

Finding patterns

Patterns are everywhere!

In this activity, you will identify as many patterns as you can in the place where you are, or in a place of your choice.

You may find patterns in the following:

Think about what makes your selection a pattern. Then, reflect on the following questions:

  • What kinds of patterns were found?
  • What was your favourite pattern? Explain why.

Record your answers by using a method of your choice.

Consolidation

Designing your own pattern

Now, let's create a pattern using a geometric design. A geometric design is a design that is created with shapes and lines.

  1. First, create your geometric pattern.
  2. Then, describe what makes your design a pattern.

You may use the following frame and stickers, or another method of your choice (i.e. paper, objects, sounds, and etc.) to help create your pattern.

Think about your learning

Take a few minutes to reflect on what you have learned from this lesson.

  • What did you learn about patterns?
  • What are the traits of a pattern? In other words, what makes a pattern…a pattern?
  • Where can you find patterns around your home? In your community?

Record your ideas in a notebook or a method of your choice.
