Minds On

Notice and wonder

What do you notice about these two number lines?

Brainstorm

What do you think?

Is there enough information on both lines to find the missing numbers?

How were you able to find those numbers?

Record your ideas in a notebook or a method of your choice.

Action

Growing and shrinking patterns

As we explore shrinking patterns, you may wish to use a hundred chart or a number line for the following activity. Please use either interactives or another method of your choice.

Let’s explore a Number Line together! Your teacher will show you how to use the Number Line and then you can try using it yourself!

Growing Patterns

Let’s follow the steps to create a growing pattern!

  1. Choose a number between 1 to 4 (this will be your starting number).
  2. Next, choose one of the following numbers to add to your starting number: 3, 9, or 11.
    • For example, I chose to start at 2, and add 9 each time.
    • Here is a growing pattern starting at 2, and adding 9 each time: 2, 11, 20, 29, 38, 47, 56…
  3. State your pattern rule.
    • Use this statement: “Start at (Blank) and add (Blank) each time.”
  4. From your starting number, extend your pattern to a minimum of 8 terms forward.
  5. You can represent your pattern on a number line or the hundred chart by placing the “plus” sticker onto the numbers from your pattern.
    • What pattern do you notice? How would you describe it?
  6. Record the numbers in your growing pattern: (Blank), (Blank), (Blank), (Blank), (Blank), (Blank), (Blank), (Blank).”
  7. Reflect on the following questions:
    • What number pattern do you notice in the ones and tens place?
    • Are the numbers all odd or even? Are they a mix of both?
    • How would you describe your pattern of numbers?

Shrinking patterns

Let’s follow the steps to create a shrinking pattern!

  1. Your starting number will be 50.
  2. Next, choose one of the following numbers to subtract from your starting number: 3, 9, or 11.
  3. State the pattern rule: Start at 50 and subtract (Blank) each time.
  4. Represent your pattern on a Number Line or the Hundred Chart by placing the “minus” sticker onto the numbers from your pattern.
  5. Record the numbers in your shrinking pattern: (Blank), (Blank), (Blank), (Blank), (Blank) , (Blank), (Blank), (Blank)
  6. Reflect on the following questions:
    • What do you notice about this pattern?
    • How would you describe it?

Record your ideas in your notebook or another method of your choice.
