Number lines and patterns

Let’s help create a hopping pattern for a rabbit.

Follow the steps to create the hopping pattern using a number line:

White rabbit hopping away.
  1. Choose a starting number between 0 to 20 (this is where your rabbit will start from).
  2. Next, choose a number to add to your starting number (this number is the size of the rabbit’s hop).
  3. Record the numbers in your pattern.
  4. Reflect on the following question:
    • How many hops does it take the rabbit to reach a number greater than 100?

Press ‘Example’ to reveal an example for this activity.

Here is an example:

  • The starting number is 18. So the rabbit will start at 18.
  • The rabbit hopped forward by 5. So the rabbit’s hop size is 5.
  • These are the numbers in this pattern: 18, 23, 28, 33, 38, 43, 48, 53, 58, 63, 68, 73, 78, 83, 88, 93, 98, 103.
  • It took the rabbit 17 hops before it was able to go past 100.

Your turn!

Let's continue exploring patterns. You may wish to use a number line, a hundred chart, or another method of your choice to help create your pattern.

Task 1: Creating a Number Pattern

  1. Create a number pattern. Show at least 3 terms.
  2. Describe your number pattern.
  3. Are the numbers in your pattern getting bigger or smaller?

Let’s explore a Hundred Chart together!

Task 2: Creating a shape pattern

Review the number pattern you made in Task 1. Create the same pattern using shapes of your choice. Show at least 3 terms.

Record your shape pattern in a method of your choice.

Task 3: Find the terms

The third term in a pattern is 36. This pattern is getting smaller by 2 each time.

Use the following interactive Hundred Chart or Number line to investigate this pattern.

Reflect on the following questions about this pattern.

Select the correct answer, then press ‘Check Answer’ to see how you did.

Brainstorm

Share your thoughts

Reflect on the pattern described in Task 3, and answer the following prompts:

  • Describe the rule the pattern follows.
  • Are the numbers in the pattern getting bigger or smaller?

Record your ideas in your notebook or another method of your choice.

Consolidation

Create your own pattern

  • Make a repeating pattern of your own.
  • What is the repeating part of the pattern?
  • Describe, create, and extend the pattern.
  • Recreate your pattern using shapes of your choice.

You may wish to support your answer using a number line or a hundred chart. Some math symbols have been used as shapes on this number line but you can use shapes of your choice for your pattern.
