Minds On
Patterns

There is a pattern that starts with 5 and increases by 2 each time.
- What could the pattern look like?
- Represent the pattern in at least 2 ways.
You may wish to use the hundred charts, number line, or another method of your choice to help count and support your thinking!
Record your ideas in your notebook or another method of your choice.

Representations
Brainstorm
What did you do?
Reflect back to the Pattern Activity from the Minds On section:
- What representations did you use to show the pattern?
- Did you use a Number Line?
- Did you build it?
Record your ideas in a notebook or a method of your choice.
Did you write it out?
Press ‘Show Answer’ to access the written pattern.
5, 7, 9, 11, 12, …
What is the same about each representation? What’s different?
Press ‘Show Answer’ to access the pattern’s representation.
Each representation shows the pattern starting with or at five and repeatedly adds on two with each iteration. We can also show this pattern using a table of values.
Different models
Let’s use the pattern to create a table of values. Each iteration of the pattern is called a term and is named by its place in the pattern.
For example, in the previous pattern:
5, 7, 9, 11, 12, …
Term 1 is the number 5. Term 2 is the number 7. Term 3 is the number 9, and so on. It’s the same for concrete models.
Concrete model
The number of elements there are in a term is called the term value.
Number lines
How would this look like as a Number Line?
Table of values
So, what does this look like in a table of values?
Term number | Term value |
---|---|
1 |
5 |
2 |
7 |
3 |
9 |
4 |
11 |
5 |
15 |
Stone collection
There are seven lucky stones in a collection.
Five more stones are added each week.
- Show the pattern of stone collecting for at least the first four weeks.
- Represent the pattern in at least two ways, and one of the representations must be with a table of values.
- Describe the pattern.
- Explain what part of the pattern repeats, and how you know.
You may wish to use the hundreds chart, counters, or another method of your choice to help count and support your thinking!
For the hundreds chart, you can use a different rock sticker for each week.
Complete the Stone Collection Pattern in your notebook or using the following fillable and printable document. You can also use another method of your choice.

Test Your Skills!
Test your skills
In the table of values, there seems to be some errors.
- Describe the pattern.
- Justify your thinking and fix the table of values.
- You may wish to use counters, blocks, or another method of your choice to help count and support your thinking!
Complete the Making Corrections Activity in your notebook or using the following fillable and printable document. You can also use another method of your choice.
