When organizing an activity day, what information would someone need?
What questions might they ask learners?
Asking questions and taking surveys are excellent ways to gather information!
The first question one group of learners were asked was, “What is your favourite activity from the following list?”
- chess
- mural making
- soccer
- basketball
Once the question had been asked, the organizers needed to gather the data into a frequency table.
A frequency table is very similar to a tally table.
- First, the options for the question asked are listed.
- Next, the tally marks for how many chose each option are added.
- Last, the tally marks are added together and the totals are written.
A frequency table lists the options in the first column and then has a column to place the tally that is recorded when the question is asked. The third column is for the number of tally marks for each row. Tally marks are organized into groups of five. To make it easier to count the tally marks, the fifth mark in a tally count crosses through the other four marks like this:
