Division
Today, we are working on division.
- Division, like multiplication, describes repeated groups of equal size.
- When solving a multiplication question, we don’t know the total, but we do know the number of groups, and size of the groups. When solving division questions, we know the total, but we don’t know the size of the group or the number of groups.
Let’s look at some questions.
Here, we are solving the equation 9 ÷ 3 =
This picture shows that there are 9 dots all together. We also know that there are 3 equal groups. How many dots are there in each group?
In this question, we are solving the equation 10 ÷ 5 =
This picture shows that there are 10 dots all together and that each group has 5 dots in it. How many equal groups of dots are there?
