Diversity in Canada
Diversity means to include a variety. Canada is diverse, which means that we have a variety of people from many places and communities around the world.
Access the following audio clip to learn more about diversity in Canada.

Celebrating diversity
It is your turn to share information on a tradition or celebration of your choice by creating a poster or a presentation using slides or making an audio or video clip. You can choose any tradition or celebration, whether you personally participate in it or not.
Your poster or presentation will include:
- The name of the celebration (For example, my family celebrates Christmas.)
- Why this celebration takes place (For example, my reason for celebrating Christmas is cultural. My family celebrates Christmas for religious reasons.)
- The activities that take place at this celebration (For example, playing games with my family is one of my favourite things to do during Christmas. Our family goes to church on Christmas Eve together.)
- Where and when this celebration happens (For example, my family celebrates at my Grandma’s house on December 24th and 25th, every year.)
- Special parts of this celebration (For example, a special part of Christmas is listening to Christmas carols. I like to sing and listen to all types of carols. I also like to listen to a special type of music called Parang. It is a type of Spanish Christmas music from Trinidad. It makes me feel happy.)
- Why people should learn about this celebration (For example, I think people should learn about this celebration because it is important to celebrate diverse communities in Canada.)

Telling stories about traditions
In the following video, Joshua shares a lot of important parts of his life and Ojibwe culture. One special activity Joshua shares with us is his love of playing music with his dewe’igan (drum), an important tradition in his community. As you explore the video:
- note the important parts of Joshua’s traditions that he shares with us
- record any specific words you think are important
If you had to explain Joshua’s traditions to a friend who had not seen this video, what are the top three things you would tell them about? What important information would you include in your story about Joshua?
Record your three key points using a tool of your choice.
Press Hint to reveal the questions to prompt your thinking.
- What kinds of activities did you see?
- What words did Joshua use to describe the powwow?
- Was there any special regalia (clothing) mentioned?
- Were there any crafts at the powwow?
