A basic human need is something we must have to live or survive.
There are five basic human needs.
Explore the following images and descriptions. Use these as clues to figure out the five basic human needs. Throughout this activity, record your ideas in a notebook or another method of your choice.

Let’s learn a little more about how people around the world meet their basic needs.
All living things need food to survive.
We can only live for about three weeks without food.
Food is energy for our bodies. We cannot grow without food. Our bodies help let us know when we need to eat.
How do people meet their need for food? Where do they go to get it?
Depending on where people live, their community needs, and what the land and water is like around them, they will get their food in a variety of ways.

All living things need water to survive.
Water is needed for life.
Our body cannot function without water. As humans, we can only live for about three days without water.
Where do we go when we need water?
Depending on where people live, the needs of their community, and where they get their water, the water source will change for each community.

Humans need clothing.
Clothing helps us to stay warm in cold weather and protects us from the sun in hot weather.
Depending on where people live, the community they live in, and what the weather is like, the type of clothing needed will change.
What are some ways through which people meet their needs for clothing?

Transportation is how people travel from place to place.
People need to travel to get the things they need to survive, such as food, water, medicine, and materials to make things, or buy things.
Where people live in the world, the needs of their community, and what the land is like will determine the type of transportation needed.
What are some modes of transportation that humans can use to get from place to place?

All living things need shelter.
Shelter protects us from weather like snow or rain.
We even need shelter to protect us on very hot days.
What country people live in, the needs of their communities, and what the land is like around them, will change the type of shelter they need.
What are some of the types of shelters that people live in?

- If playing with a partner, it is your partner’s turn to flip through the carousel, and you will be the one who says, “STOP!” Your partner will continue with step 3.
