A continent is a large area of land on the Earth.

The map of the world shows the seven continents labeled as: North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia/Oceania, and Antarctica.

  • North America is in the Northern Hemisphere (the top left on the map).
  • South America is in the Southern Hemisphere (the bottom left on the map).
  • Antarctica is a land mass covering the bottom of the world.
  • Europe is in the Northern Hemisphere towards the East (top right on the map).
  • Asia is next to Europe and also in the North Hemisphere towards the East (top right on the map).
  • Africa is divided almost in half by the Equator. Therefore some of the continent is in the Northern Hemisphere, and some is in the Southern Hemisphere. Africa is below Europe on the map.
  • Australia/Oceania is in the Southern Hemisphere below Asia.

An ocean is a huge body of salt water. Oceans cover nearly 71 percent of the Earth’s surface. Oceans have almost 98 percent of all the water on Earth.

  • The Pacific Ocean exists next to North and South America, Asia, and Australia.
  • The Atlantic Ocean is located between Eastern North and South America, and Western Africa and Europe.
  • The Indian Ocean is located between Eastern Africa, Southern Asia, and Western Australia.
  • The Arctic Ocean is located at the top of the world, which we consider the North Pole.
  • The Southern or Antarctic Ocean is located around Antartica.
Together, they can be examined as one world ocean because water flows freely between them.
