Binary form (AB form). A musical form that consists of two different or contrasting sections (A and B). Explore also form.

A steady and repeating pulse in music. Part of the element of duration.

An aspect of the element called duration. The pattern of long and short sounds or silences. Patterns can be created by both musical sounds and lyrics or words. Rhythm differs from beat; for example, the rhythm at the beginning of a song might be “ta, ti-ti, tika-tika, ta”, whereas the beat is the steady pulse of “ta, ta, ta, ta”. Explore also beat.

Norval Morrisseau was an Indigenous artist from Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek (formerly known as Sand Point First Nation). He taught himself how to paint. His paintings often had thick black outlines and bright colours. His grandfather taught him about his culture and traditions when he was young. His grandfather’s teachings inspired some of the elements he included in his paintings.

The differences in the parts create contrast.

A principle of design. Contrast is the use of opposite kinds of art elements. Contrast can be created by using rough and smooth textures. Contrast can also be created by using dark and light values.

Music that has two different or contrasting parts is called AB form.

In music, the beat is a steady sound that goes through the whole song or poem. It helps us stay together and keep time!

Music also has a rhythm.

Rhythm is made up of long (stretched) and short sounds and silences.

One sound on a beat is called ta.

A straight vertical line

Two sounds on a beat is called ti-ti.

A sound that stretches over two beats is called ta-ah.

A half note.

A silent beat is called ta rest.

A quarter rest note.
