In this learning activity, we are going to be exploring how to send objects.

Before we get started, let’s do a safety check and a warmup!

Now it’s time for a warmup!

Explore the following warm up activities. Choose 3 of the activities to perform on your own!

  1. Start by standing or sitting.
  2. Slowly move one of your elbows up at the same time you bring your knee up.
  3. Do the same on the other side and keep switching sides.
  4. Count to 15 then stop.

  2. Bring one knee up as close as you can.
  3. Hug your knee with both of your arms.
  4. Repeat the same step for your other leg.
  5. Repeat this exercise 2 times on both legs.

  2. Move your arms forward and hold your hands together (If you can, try and keep your thumbs down as you do this).
  3. Slowly try and move your body forward, try not to move your feet.
  4. Hold this stretch and count to 10.
  5. Repeat this stretch one more time.

  2. Move both arms in front of your chest.
  3. Slowly kick one foot out then bring it back down.
  4. Repeat the same with your other leg.
  5. Repeat this stretch and count to 10 then stop.

  4. Bring your body back to where you started.
  5. Slowly turn your body to the other side, hold and count to 5.

Sending strategies

Today we are going to practise sending objects.

There are different ways we can send objects.

Let’s send objects using an underhand throw.

An underhand throw is when you move an object forward using a one-handed movement.

Underhand throw instructions

  1. Begin by sitting or standing.
  2. Pick your object and target.
  3. Get a good hold of your object.
  4. Position your body towards the target and focus.
  5. If standing, you can take a step forward with the opposite foot of your throwing arm.
  6. Move your throwing arm behind your back.
  7. Gently move your arm forward and release your object.
  8. Repeat this 5 times.

Remember you can take breaks.

Let’s send objects using an overhand throw.

An overhand throw is when you move an object forward using an overhand movement.

Overhand throw instructions

  1. Begin by sitting or standing.
  2. Pick your object and a target.
  3. Get a good hold of your object.
  4. Position your body towards the target and focus.
  5. If standing, you can take a step forward with the opposite foot of your throwing arm.
  6. Move your throwing arm behind your head.
  7. Gently move your arm forward and release your object.
  8. Repeat this 5 times.

Let’s send objects by striking with our feet.

Striking is when you send force to an object with your foot.

The object can be still in one place or it can be moving.

Striking instructions

  1. Begin by sitting or standing.
  2. Pick your object and a target.
  3. Place your object on the floor and get behind it.
  4. Position your body towards the target and focus.
  5. If you are sitting, gently kick the ball with your feet, moving it forward.
  6. If you are standing, move your kicking leg back then gently move it forwards to strike the object.
  7. You can use your arms to help balance.
  8. Repeat this 5 times.

Let’s pause and reflect.

Answer the following questions using a method of your choice.

  • How did your body feel after all that movement?
  • How did you feel about sending objects in different ways?

In this game, you will be sending an object at a target in your space.

Make sure your object is light and easy to throw.

Always be sure to do your safety checks before completing an activity!

Here are some objects you could use:

  • ball
  • bean bag
  • rolled up sock
  • recycled scrunched up paper

You will be sending your object at a target. Here are some possible targets you could use:

  • basket
  • bucket
  • bin

Now that you have your object and target, let’s learn how to play the game!

Instructions

  • Place your target down in your spot.
  • Try and send your object to your target using:
    • one body part
    • a different body part
    • two body parts
  • Complete this 5 times. Try moving your target.

If possible, you can also take turns with a partner.
