Exploring media

There are many different reasons to enjoy media. For example, sometimes we enjoy media to learn. Other times we enjoy media to be entertained. Can you think of other reasons why we enjoy media?

There are also many kinds of people who enjoy media. For example, some media is created for adults and other media is created for kids. How can you tell if a piece of media has been created for kids?

Let’s explore some different forms of media and try to identify who the media has been created for (the audience) and why the media has been created (the purpose).

Purpose: This is the reason the media was created. The purpose of a media text may be to sell you a product (such as a toy in a magazine), to entertain you (a tv show, radio, or movie) or to provide information.

Intended Audience: This is the group of people that the media is trying to reach. For example, some commercials are meant to appeal to children and some commercials are meant to appeal to adults.
