A body base is part of the body that is supporting the rest of the body. When someone is kneeling, for example, the knees are the body base.

Action

Get ready, get set…

Did you know we can use dance and movement to express the feelings and ideas of songs, stories, and poems?

Let’s return to the poem from the Minds On section.

Whoosh, swish, swoosh, crash, splash!

The words in this poem describe waves and how waves move.

Access the following video to learn more about waves.

For the next activity, let’s explore how we can use movements to express words.

You may use the following checklist to complete this activity.

Movement and Words

What’s a body base?

One way to express words using movements is by using body bases.

A body base is the part of the body that holds up the rest of the body.

Explore the following images for examples of body bases.

Teacher B: What direction might the body move? Forward? Backward? Teacher A: For sure! Forward, backward, up, down, and sideways!

Movements and directions

Explore the following animation to learn more about the different directions a body can move.

Rush, swish, and splash

Your body can also move in the same way that waves do.

Press the following tabs to learn more about performing rushing, swishing, and splashing movements.

To do a rushing movement, a person could:

  • stand with their feet flat on the floor.
  • keep their arms at the sides of the body.
  • swing the arms forward and up above the head, creating a curved shape while running forward or staying in one place.

Explore the following set of images for an example of a rushing movement.

A person starts by standing with their arms next to their side. They lift their arms straight up. Next, they bend their arms forward in a curved position.

To do a swishing movement, a person could:

  • start by lying on their back with arms at the sides of the body.
  • swing the arms from side to side, or use the arms to make small circles.

Explore the following series of images for an example of a swishing movement.

A person starts by laying flat on the ground with their arms by their sides and the palms facing in to their body. Next, they turn their arms so their palms face out and up.

To do a splashing movement, a person could:

  • start on their knees or by sitting in a chair.
  • slowly raise arms up above the head and quickly drop them back down to the floor.

Explore the following series of images for an example of a splashing movement.

Move like a wave
